Pre-Primary
Celebrating Book Day and the Magic of Reading
Reading remains one of the most powerful gifts we can give young children. Strong reading habits build imagination, vocabulary, comprehension and confident communication skills that carry students well beyond their school years.
This week our pre-primary students celebrated World Book Day with a wonderful day of dress-up and book exploration. Classrooms came alive as children arrived dressed as their favourite storybook characters, bringing beloved tales to life.
A special thank you to our parent community for their enthusiastic support. Many parents gave their time to visit classrooms and read to the children, a reminder of how much it means when families and school come together around a shared love of stories.
Thank you to all our families for helping us nurture that love in our young students
Kindy and Grade 0000 Life Skills – Little Kitchen
This week our Kindy and Grade 000 students explored practical everyday skills through a fun "Little Kitchen" experience.
Children practised pouring, setting the table, spooning ingredients and safely chopping toy fruit, all activities that develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and a sense of routine and responsibility. We also sang Pat-a-Cake together before students got creative designing and decorating their own cupcakes.
Visit From Nurse Rebecca
We were delighted to welcome Sister Rebecca, a nurse, proud Crawford mom and lecturer from the University of Witwatersrand, who visited our class to speak to the children about healthy habits. Sister Rebecca taught us the importance of washing our hands properly and brushing our teeth every day.
The children had so much fun practicing the handwashing song and learning the correct way to brush their teeth. It was an interactive and engaging session that everyone truly enjoyed.
Thank you, Sister Rebecca, for such an amazing and informative visit. We appreciate the time and care you shared with our little ones.

Grade Three - How We Express Ourselves
To launch our new unit, How We Express Ourselves, teachers arrived dressed as storybook characters, sparking immediate curiosity among students. Using the "I See, I Think, I Wonder" thinking routine, students observed the costumes and asked thoughtful questions.
Throughout the unit, students will explore how stories are shared through books, drama, art and music, and how storytelling helps us understand ourselves and others.
Grade Four Students Get Creative with Colour Wheels
Our Grade Four students recently enjoyed a fun and creative art activity while learning about colour theory. Using the stationery, they had available, students illustrated their own colourful colour wheels.
The activity helped students explore primary, secondary, and tertiary colours, while also encouraging them to think about how colours relate to one another. With plenty of enthusiasm and imagination, students carefully arranged their colours to create bright and balanced designs
Grade Five Students Explore Tonal Shading Through Realistic Eye Drawings
Our Grade 5 students recently explored observational drawing by creating realistic drawings of the human eye, using the exercise to learn tonal shading techniques including hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and smooth blending.
Working from reference images, students paid close attention to detail, capturing light reflections, eyelash texture and subtle shadows to create depth and dimension. The project strengthened drawing skills while encouraging patience, focus and creativity. We are proud of the effort and progress each student showed.

Congratulations to the Grade 12 students of Crawford College Ruimsig for winning our very first Math Literacy Simulation Game, generating an impressive R84 000 profit after tax. In the game, students run a simulated business while planning an exotic holiday, competing to see which team can turn the highest profit as part of their Grade 12 SBA project.
Crawford College Ruimsig has set a remarkable benchmark. Well done to all who participated, your creativity, teamwork and business thinking were outstanding.
Speech and Drama College Public Speaking Festival
Over the past two weeks, our public speaking teams competed in the Speech and Drama College Public Speaking Festival, a prestigious competition founded in 1945. Our Grade 10 Open Team earned an A symbol with an entertaining and captivating performance.
The Grade 9 Open Team earned a B symbol, while the Grade 12 Open Team showed particular resilience, with Keisha restarting her speech after a disruption and earning specific praise from the adjudicator, helping the team to a B+ symbol. Saien Moodley was a standout in the Individual Speaker section, earning an A+ for both his Prepared and Impromptu speeches.
Our Grade 12 Trophy Team rounded off the competition with a B+ despite challenging weather conditions. Thank you to the host schools, to parents for their support, and to Mr Hughes and Ms Greathead for accompanying the teams. We look forward to Con Spirito next term.
Art is Smart
On 28 February, our Matric Visual Art students visited the Javett-UP Art Centre at the University of Pretoria, an experience that proved both inspiring and thought-provoking. Students explored contemporary artworks, engaged with the stories behind each piece and asked genuinely perceptive questions about standing out as IEB students and the role of bravery in creative expression.
The trip broadened horizons and deepened their understanding of art from concept to execution. It was a highlight of the Matric art programme, and we look forward to seeing where their passion takes them.
