Maths in Action

Our Grade 00 students have been enthusiastically exploring mathematical concepts through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

By using loose parts, interactive cards, drawing activities, and real-life materials, our young mathematicians are developing strong number sense while building confidence, problem-solving skills, and a love for learning.

Addition with Loose Parts

Students explored simple addition by using natural materials and loose parts to create number sentences.

They counted objects, combined groups, and discovered how numbers can be added together to make a larger amount. These practical experiences help students develop an understanding of early number concepts in a fun and engaging way.

 One-to-One Correspondence

Through matching cards and loose parts, students practised one-to-one correspondence by placing one object with one picture or number. This important skill strengthens counting accuracy and builds a solid foundation for future mathematical learning.

Exploring Big and Small

Students investigated the concept of size by comparing objects and identifying which items were big and which were small. They further extended their learning by drawing pictures and discussing the differences they observed, developing important mathematical language and observation skills.

These playful and engaging activities encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and a positive attitude towards mathematics. We are proud of the enthusiasm our Grade 00 students how each day as they discover that maths is all around them!

Kindy & Grade 0000 Learn Through Their Homes

As part of their Our Surroundings theme, our Kindy and Grade 0000 students have been exploring their homes and families through play and inquiry.

The classroom was transformed into a home environment where students could explore familiar objects, routines and household spaces. They have also been learning about symbols in the home and how they communicate meaning.

Through pretend play, students have practised everyday activities such as setting the table, organising household items and caring for their environment. These experiences are helping them build independence and make connections between their classroom learning and the world around them.

Discovering Patterns: Patterns Are Everywhere

As part of their How the World Works Unit of Inquiry, our Grade 0 students have been exploring how patterns and cycles help us understand the world around us.

They have looked for patterns in nature, weather, animals and everyday life, from animal markings and leaves to the changing seasons and life cycles. In Mathematics, they have created and extended AB, AAB and ABB patterns using colours, shapes, objects and numbers.

The activities are helping students recognise relationships, make predictions and explain what they notice, showing them that patterns are not only found in Mathematics, but throughout the world around us.

Celebrating Andisiwe Gxakwe

Andisiwe Gxakwe received her official South African colours at the Street Dance Association Capping Ceremony on 8 August 2026.

From 10 to 17 August, she travelled to Manchester to represent Team South Africa at the United Dance Organisation (UDO) World Championships. As the youngest South African participant, Andisiwe progressed to the semi-finals before placing eighth in the world in the solo finals.

Congratulations to Andisiwe on this achievement and for representing South Africa on the international stage. We are incredibly proud of her.

Celebrating Peyton Govender

Congratulations to Peyton Govender, who has been selected to represent Gauteng at the Dance Sport Club League Interprovincial Tournament (National Championships), taking place from 9 to 11 October 2026 at the Western Cape Sports Centre in Kuils River, Cape Town.

Peyton will compete as part of the official Protea Gauteng Provincial Team. We wish Peyton all the best for the championships and look forward to following her progress.

Grade 3s Have an Exciting Experience at the Innovation Station

The students then visited the Innovation Station, where they explored the different organs of the human body using VR headsets. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to connect their classroom learning with an exciting, hands-on experience.

Crawford International Visits LIV Lanseria: Building Futures Through Service

On 27 August 2026, students and staff from Crawford International Ruimsig visited LIV Lanseria as part of Crawford International’s national CSI partnership with LIV Village.

During the visit, Crawford students worked with students from the Ithuteng After-School Programme, supporting literacy and numeracy through shared learning and mentorship. The afternoon gave our students an opportunity to engage with the LIV community while developing their understanding of service and leadership.

The partnership brings Crawford campuses across South Africa together to support literacy, numeracy, mentorship and community engagement. As part of the first year of the partnership, Crawford aims to collect 10,000 books and educational resources for children and young people in LIV communities.

The visit to LIV Lanseria was the first of a series of engagements planned for Crawford College campuses in Gauteng, with campuses scheduled to participate throughout this year and next.

Grade 9s Online Career Assessment

On 20 August, our Grade 9 students participated in an online career assessment led by Anne-Marie Stanisavljevic, Managing Director of Online Career Guidance.

The assessment helped students explore their strengths, interests and career orientation as they consider their subject choices for Grade 10 and beyond. The results provide students with insight into possible study and career pathways that align with their individual profiles.

Speak the Speech Public Speaking Competition at La Salle College

Our Public Speaking Team recently participated in the inaugural Speak the Speech Public Speaking Competition at La Salle College, alongside La Salle College, North Riding College and Andrew’s Academy.

Grade 10 speakers Shaina Rammbwa, Gabriella Rutledge, Onthatile Moreriane and Mihle Mhlongo represented Crawford Ruimsig, presenting speeches exploring Africa, Ubuntu and the role of young people in shaping conversations.

The team won the Group Speech category in the first round, while Mihle won the Individual Speech category, securing a place in the final.

In the final round, the team placed second in the Group Speech category, while Mihle placed third in the Individual Speech category. Crawford Ruimsig finished second overall among the four participating schools.

Well done to our speakers on their performances, and thank you to Ms Greathead for accompanying and supporting the team throughout the competition. We also congratulate La Salle College on hosting the event.
