MANDELA DAY: MAKING A DIFFERENCE THROUGH ECD TOYS
In honour of Mandela Day this July, our Crawford International La Lucia students dedicated their morning to making Early Childhood Development (ECD) toys for under-resourced local schools.
Children in disadvantaged environments often face multiple risk factors in their early years, including low levels of stimulation. Without this, they may struggle to reach their full physical, emotional, and intellectual potential. ECD toys play a vital role in building these foundations by refining motor skills, encouraging creativity, enhancing problem-solving, supporting emotional growth, and fostering curiosity about the world.
Our Pre-Primary, Preparatory, and College students joined hands in this initiative, creating toys such as clappers, fishing games, counting and alphabet books, shakers, pipe rattles, skipping ropes, caterpillars, octopi, and more. A highlight of the day was when our Grade 8 and 9 students partnered with our youngest Crawfordians in Grade 00 and Grade 0, working together to craft these special gifts.
It was a joyful and meaningful experience for all involved, as our students not only learned the value of giving back but also contributed to empowering other children with the tools they need to thrive. We are proud to play a small part in building brighter futures and honouring Madiba’s legacy of service to others.
PRE-PRIMARY
Pre-Primary Bus Ride
To launch our new Primary Years Programme (PYP) inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme "How We Organise Ourselves", our Crawford International La Lucia Pre-Primary Grade 000 students experienced a real-life provocation a ride on a school bus!
As they climbed aboard, followed safety instructions, and observed how the bus moved through the school community, our young students demonstrated what it means to be inquirers. They asked questions, shared their thoughts, and made meaningful connections to their daily lives.
A wonderful start to our unit as we begin to explore the systems that help us move from place to place.
Women’s Day
In celebration of Women’s Day this August, Crawford International La Lucia Pre-Primary created a special photo booth for our little ones and their families. The booth gave students the opportunity to capture fun, memorable photos while also sharing heartfelt messages and well wishes with the incredible women who inspire, guide, and nurture them every day.
PREPARATORY
Buddy the Superhero PET Fish
In August, our Crawford International La Lucia Preparatory campus was buzzing with excitement as we welcomed Buddy the Superhero PET Fish.
Our friends from Alpla Recycling, Re-Purpose and Polyco joined us with their incredible teams of passionate environmental enthusiasts to launch this exciting initiative. Buddy isn’t just any fish, he’s on a mission to help us learn about the importance of recycling, reducing waste and protecting our oceans from plastic pollution.
Our students came armed with plastic bottles to “feed” Buddy, kicking off his mission in the best way possible. We’re looking forward to seeing him completely full within the first week.
Adding to the fun, we were visited by Binny the Recycling Mascot, who got everyone singing and dancing along to a catchy recycling song! Binny reminded us how important it is to use the correct bins when throwing our waste away because every small action makes a big difference.
The event was filled with exciting energy and a shared vision of making a difference for our planet.
